Command & Conquer: Generals 2 trailer

It 'was revealed by BioWare officially dedicated a sequel to Command & Conquer Generals brand released in 2013 which will be called: Command & Conquer Generals 2. Among the most interesting features of the RTS guys at BioWare Montreal stands out without a doubt the use of the Frostbite Engine 2, or the graphics engine used by DICE on Battlefield 3, which surely will make a significant improvement graph. In the meantime, we can look at these two new screenshots just recently published its video and VGA of 2011.

Command & Conquer Generals 2 Free Play

Electronic Arts is transforming Command & Conquer: Generals 2, first announced last year, into a free-to-play title simply called Command & Conquer. That doesn’t mean Generals 2 is going away, it’s just not called Generals 2 anymore. It’s part of a Command & Conquer platform that, for EA, appears to be a big initial step toward reinventing its venerable real-time strategy franchise.

The news perhaps isn’t as shocking as it once might have been. Free-to-play games are common these days, including online shooters, MMOs and DotA-style games amongst many others. For EA VP and general manager Jon Van Caneghem, this move was the next natural step.

“We’ve seen what online has been able to do for RPGs, for FPS games, for puzzle games, and the like—what I’ve been interested in is what can online do for strategy games?  To that end, we’ve been developing a platform for Command and Conquer games with Generals 2 as the lead product on that platform, focusing on having a single identity across the franchise to bolster social ties and also providing us a way to add and update the games constantly over time.”

“The platform itself also offers several other advantages to players and developers. With a lower barrier to entry, more people can experience our game and gain access to the cutting-edge visuals, sound and destruction of a full, AAA strategy game – for free. This live service approach also makes developing games more exciting as we are constantly responding and reacting to community feedback to deliver content that they care about.”

As of yet, no specific payment structure has been determined. “We are still building out the game and the exact scope of the advanced experience has not been announced yet. In our development, we are guided by the commitment to create a gameplay experience that offers the cerebral, strategic fun and fast-paced action that fans have come to expect from our franchise with no barrier or resistance.”

The Generals portion of this new Command & Conquer will still be built with Frostbite 2, though it appears to be too early to get a sense of the exact amount of content that will be included at launch. “The content that we have already created for Generals 2 will be part of this new free-to-play experience. We aren’t ready to discuss specifics about factions and units, but we are building an experience that you’d expect from a traditional Command & Conquer game, with the advantage of continuously building new content based on player and community feedback.”

Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be a single-player portion anymore, a feature that seemed to be a prominent part of the game the last time we had a chance to ask about Generals 2. This new Command & Conquer will also require you to be connected online at all times. “At launch, the focus will be on multiplayer as we are currently focused on building a fun, high quality RTS experience that we want to get in your hands on as soon as possible.  From there, we will continuously evaluate additional content based on a variety of player feedback.” So perhaps there could be single-player content some time later?

It’s certainly an interesting approach for the franchise, and one that’s perhaps better suited for the rapidly changing world of PC gaming. For now, EA has no plans for retail distribution of the game and has “nothing related to consoles to announce at this time.”

Hopefully EA will be able to share more details soon about gameplay and pricing structures with this reinvention of its RTS distribution model. “Command & Conquer  is a destination for players to go to experience the Command & Conquer universe and that has the potential to extend beyond  Generals.  Though it starts with Generals next year, Red Alert, Tiberium and beyond will serve as additional content offerings for the game.”

No Single-Player for Command & Conquer Generals 2 at Release

Command & Conquer: Generals 2 will apparently launch without a single-player campaign, according to developer Bioware Victory.

In an interview with PC Gamer, the company's general manager John Van Caneghem explained that “co-operative and competitive” skirmishes would be the main focus of the title initially, with other modes being added later based on community feedback.

"We decided to choose Generals as the first set of games we build under the universe, but we’ll be expanding after that, like Tiberium and Red Alert as well as some others as well."

Speaking about the potential of a story campaign being one such mode, Van Caneghem said, "It is something we haven’t announced yet how we’re going to do it." He explained that one of the main benefits of the game being online was that it facilitated the easy testing of new play styles, claiming, "As a live service I think the exciting part is you can try things. You can see what the community wants, you can give it a shot, you can put it up for a weekend and see how it goes, develop towards what the fans like."

While he didn't comment on EA's decision to make the game free-to-play, he did reveal that Command & Conquer Generals 2 will be the first in a new series of online C&C games that explore the series' history.

"We decided to choose Generals as the first set of games we build under the universe, but we’ll be expanding after that, like Tiberium and Red Alert as well as some others as well," he said. "Generals 2 was the first one, and it was one of the biggest sellers, as well as the fanbase has been asking for it for some time."

He rounded up the interview by explaining that Bioware Victory is keen for the upcoming RTS game to break onto the e-sports scene. To this end, alongside multiplayer deathmatch and co-operative modes, Van Caneghem claimed that, "We’re really going to run the gambit of what people enjoy in a multiplayer environment.

"I don’t think we’re making a list of the features yet, but I think you can basically make a list of the assumed ones that you’d need to be an e-sports game, and it’s definitely part of the plan," he added.

Command & Conquer: Generals 2 will release as a free-to-play title on PC sometime in 2013, but you can register your interest for the beta now.

GLA Rocket Buggy Reviews

C&C General 2 : Artillery The Rocket Buggy is GLA's basic artillery unit. In Generals 1, the GLA had two artillery units: the Rocket Buggy, and the Scud Launcher. The Scud Launcher was a special unlockable you could earn from in-game experience, and could lob large missiles at long distances. The Rocket Buggy was available as standard equipment, but required direct line of sight to the target in order to attack it. It was also fast and responsive, allowing it to kite enemy units fairly easily.

The Rocket Buggy is equivalent to the Rocket Buggy from the original Generals. The attributes listed in this panel are meant to be a frame of reference to illustrate what the Generals 2 version of the unit might be like.

GLA Scorpion Tank

GLA Scorpion Tank : C&C Generals 2 Main battle tank It's difficult to discern whether the unit depicted in this image is actually the Scorpion from the original Generals, but it's a safe bet that whatever this unit is called, it will serve as GLA's main battle tank. Being a scrappy hit and run faction, GLA's main battle tank(s) were not the toughest in a straight up fight, and relied on numbers to offset their tactical weakness. The Scorpion relied on a rocket upgrade to give it some more firepower, but its comparatively light armor meant it would not last as long in a fight as a Crusader.

GLA Quad Cannon Anti-air / anti-infantry reviews

GLA Quad Cannon Anti-air / anti-infantry The Quad Cannon is GLA's primary all purpose vehicle, but it specializes in killing air units and infantry. In Generals, the versatility of Quad Cannons against a variety of targets made it the backbone of any GLA army. While it's safe to assume it will serve a similar role in Generals 2, its specific balance against targets other than infantry and aircraft could result in a less well-rounded unit.

The Quad Cannon is equivalent to the Quad Cannon from the original Generals. The attributes listed in this panel are meant to be a frame of reference to illustrate what the C&C Generals 2 version of the unit might be like.

GLA Technical

C&C General 2 GLA unit : GLA Technical Anti-infantry transport The Technical is a staple of GLA early game harassment. In Generals it was one of the most lightly armored vehicles in the game, but it was also the fastest ground unit, making it an excellent transport. Unlike the USA Humvee, its occupants cannot fire while they're inside, but its sheer speed allows it to drop them off for quick pot shots before picking them up again and driving off. While the Technical has a fairly weak anti-infantry gun, it counters infantry more effectively by running them over rather than shooting at them.

C&C General 2 News : What’s So BioWare About the Next Command & Conquer?

During my recent interview with BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, we talked about the obvious things like Mass Effect and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

We also discussed Command & Conquer.

Why were we discussing Command & Conquer? More specifically, as I asked both men, why should we think of the upcoming Command & Conquer Generals 2 as a BioWare game? After all, wasn't Generals 2 in development at the former EA LA studio, which was known briefly as Victory Games? And wasn't that studio simply re-branded as BioWare Victory? Is there really anything BioWare about this game other than the name?

Should I be so cynical?
"I hope not," Muzyka said to me.

"We want to bring BioWare quality," he said. "We want to bring a compelling story to a real-time strategy kind of experience."

We're talking about a real-time strategy game that's part of a series that, if it was ever known for story, was known for cheesy live-action sequences starring hammy actors and, once pro wrestler Ric Flair being attacked by a bear. (To be fair, that was from the goofier Red Alert sub-brand of C&C games.)

Muzyka nevertheless sees a "really interesting opportunity to add more story into that space. We see that as an opportunity to kind of innovate and give people more." Vague enough, sure, but Muzyka does have the presence of mind to temper expectations, saying that story would be added "in a way that's appropriate for the genre. We want to make it more compelling, immersive experience for real-time strategy fans."

He and Zeschuk are both senior executives at BioWare these days. Neither is making games day to day, but their visions influence their teams. They sound as if they do respect the RTS genre for what it has been. Says Zeschuk, "Ironically, the original C&C is the first game we played in the basement when we were supposed to be working on BioWare." And Muzyka remarks that, "if you think about the combat mechanic in [early BioWare game] Baldur's Gate, that was heavily influenced by RTS mechanics."

BioWare games have always been about story and choice. It remains hard to see how those values would apply to or evolve a Command & Conquer, nor is it yet convincing that the BioWare Victory effort really is anything more than the application of a successful studio brand name on an existing crew of creators.

We'll hopefully see more of Generals 2 in the months to come. And with that, we'll get a sense of how BioWare the game is—and whether that's something Command & Conquer needed or not.

GLA Crop Duster Reviews

GLA Crop Duster : the crop duster in C&C General 2 is eqiivalent to the Toxin Tractor from the original Generals. The attributes listed in this panel are meant to be a frame of reference to illustrate what the Generals 2 version of the unit might be like.

GLA Crop Duster

Area effect chemical distribution
Given GLA's history with chemical/biological warfare, and the obvious crop duster design of this helicopter, it's likely that it will be used to contaminate large areas with hazardous agents. Poison fields will likely be lethal to infantry, but could also damage light armored vehicles. The closest Generals equivalent to this aircraft is a ground-based unit called the Toxin Tractor. The Toxin Tractor fired a focused spray of chemical agents to clear garrisons, but also had an ability which generated a long-lasting field of toxic waste. It's likely that the Crop Duster will serve a similar role, just in a different way.

EU Builder Reviews

C&C General 2: The EU Builder is equivalent to the Dozer from the original Generals. The attributes listed in this panel are meant to be a frame of reference to illustrate what the Generals 2 version of the unit might be like.

The EU Builder appears to have the same role as the USA Dozer from the original Generals. The notable cosmetic difference between the Generals 2 unit and its Generals 1 equivalent aside, the Command and Conquer Generals 2 EU Builder appears to be able to stack. This means multiple builders can work on the same building, allowing it to be constructed faster.

EU Tank Reviews

C&C General 2: The Tank is equivalent to the crusader from the original Generals. The attributes listed in this panel are meant to be a frame of refence to illustrate what the Command and Conquer Generals 2 version of the unit might be like.

This unit appears to be a modified Crusader from the original Generals, but there is also a possibility it is the Paladin. Regardless of its designation, this unit appears to be the EU's main battle tank. While relatively slow, main battle tanks in Generals were excellent against most vehicles, but fell easily to air units and anti-tank infantry.
